Residents of Kaduna in the North West Nigeria have called on the state government to check the activities of commercial motorcyclists in the state with a view toward reducing accident rate on the road.
The call came on the heels of incessant crash on the highway which is attributed to the recklessness of the operators of commercial motorcyclists.
Abba Musa, a prominent businessman in Tudun Wada, s suburb in Kaduna City Centre among others made the call when a motorcyclist carrying a woman ran into a stationery trailer today along Eastern by Pass, popularly known as Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway.
Both the motorcyclist and the woman whose identity could not be immediately established died on the spot.
At least there are over 50,000 commercial motorcycle operators in Kaduna who enjoy patronage of commuters due to the near collapse of transport system in the state.
Our correspondent observed that most of the accidents involving commercial motorcyclists are due to non compliance with traffic rules and regulations as well as over speeding.
With the ban on commercial motorcyclists in the neighbouring states of Kano, Niger and the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, hundreds of the operators migrated to Kaduna.
Some of the operators who are mostly youths have been accused by Road Traffic Officials of disrespect to traffic laws.
